Decor starts with the floor

We know how frustrating home décor can be. Sometimes, no matter what you try, a room just feels incomplete – like there’s something out of place or something missing. If you’re currently in a dilemma like this, the solution could be right under your nose, or – more accurately – right under your feet.

The foundation of a room’s overall look is established by two key elements: the walls and the floor. Walls are an obvious one that people think of straight away and often repaint when redecorating. Floors, however, are frequently overlooked in terms of how they add to (or subtract from) a room’s décor. There are two main aspects of flooring that can influence your home’s aesthetic theme and we’ve discussed both below.

The Type

The flooring type in a room can either complement or clash with the décor. Certain styles of furniture simply look out of place on particular floors. If you’re aiming for an ultramodern look, rustic timber floors could be a problem; but the same floors could be the perfect platform for antique-themed furniture. It all depends on your preferred décor and the overarching style of your home, so consider this carefully when making any flooring or decorating decisions.

The Colour

Neutral colours are usually ideal for flooring as they won’t interfere with any colour scheme you choose. However, turquoise tiles or maroon carpets can severely limit what will look good in a room. If you’ve got dramatically coloured floors, keep these in mind when purchasing furniture. If your floors are neutral, that’s good news for you; you can try a variety of decorations without worrying that your floor might disagree with your choices.
