Things to check at a home inspection

Hunting for the house of your dreams? Or just looking for a new place to rent? Either way, nobody wants to end up living in a place that doesn’t meet their expectations. Here are 5 not-so-obvious things to look out for when inspecting a potential home.

  1. Hints of Mould

Smell inside kitchen cupboards and look closely at shower walls to see if there are any early warning signs of mould. Even a small patch can quickly become a major headache if a professional cleaner isn’t called in to take care of it.

  1. Roof Gutter Rust

Don’t trust the view from below. Check the inside of the roof gutters to find out if any corrosion has already occurred. If the gutters will need replacing in the near future, you’d rather know about it before you buy!

  1. Uneven Ceilings

To make sure they are straight and firm, shine a light horizontally along the ceilings of the house. Any unusual shadows will reveal if there are any sags in the structure.

  1. Behind Open Doors

When you enter a room to inspect it, close the door behind you. This way, you won’t miss any markings in the part of the wall that is usually concealed behind the open door.

  1. Floor Damage

Move furniture around to make sure there are no hidden scratches or stains on the house’s floors. Pay extra attention to where floors meet walls, as this is often where shoddy workmanship is more apparent.
